Body Confidence & The Government - Matthew Burbidge

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/203405/130501_body_confidence_progress_reportv03.pdf

After reasearching Body Confidence for a short while, we came across a PDF containing information on a Body Confidence campaign the Government are conducting themselves. I found this particularly interesting as it suggested the facts and statistics used within the file would be much more reliable and trustworthy. I was looking for facts to implement into our Documentary, so this seemed to be the perfect discovery. It didn't teach me anything about documentaries but it gave me an insight into the scale of damage that body confidence is having, giving me more knowledge of the topic. It taught me that 90% of society disagree with the way bodies are represented through the media, which is one of the causes of body confidence. It also suggested to me that women suffer from body confidence issues much more than men, "our culture’s preoccupation with female beauty and feminine identity has a particular impact on women and young girls".

Celebrity views on body confidence - Billy Green

Here is a quote taken from an interview with Kim Kardashian. She gives her opinion on body confidence and self esteem. This is important to our documentary and we can quote the interview in our script voiceover. This is especially useful as one of our answers from our vox pops involves Kim Kardashian as inspiration.

Target audience feedback- Finnlea Murphy

Script- Finnlea Murphy

[[It has become so normal, so everyday, for people to worry about what they look like that it is easy to ignore the real problems this creates. Growing up in a society where mass media is fixated on a narrowly defined image of beauty and the celebrities that embody it is damaging the outlook and self-esteem of our children and teenagers and adults are not immune to these concerns. Of course, individuals differ in their confidence and resilience. But research shows that many people particularly young people are having their self-confidence corroded by the belief that their looks are the most important thing about them.]]

[[We use the term body confidence to describe the extent of an individual’s positive regard for their body, their integrated sense of body and self, and the extent to which their personal value is tied up with their physical appearance. Someone with low body confidence is likely to be dissatisfied with the way they look, overestimate the importance and value of matching current cultural beauty ideals, and spending excessive time and energy being self-conscious and invested in their appearance.]]

In 2001, a survey about about body confidence was given to 13,000 students aged between 15 and 18. The results showed that 19% of students had considered suicide and 9% had attempted it. That means that 1224 students attempted suicide because they were self conscious about their weight.

Another study showed that 77.1 percent of obese and 54.2 percent of overweight teenagers had an accurate perception of what they weighed. This raises the question, how much does this actually effect us?

There are a number of internal factors – how they think about themselves, and external factors – fashion, social media and relationships that effect body confidence within teenagers.
Body confidence is a big factor amongst teens in today's society. There seems to be an increase in girls and boys that feel body image impacts their life in a major way.

We got the chance to interview students attending The Sixth Form College Solihull and gain their ideas on how they feel body confidence applies to them. We asked them questions that we feel body confidence may have an influence on.

So ask yourselves, is this major factor of most teenagers lives something that effects you?

In a world obsessed with fashion, feminism and self empowerment why are so many of us unhappy with our bodies?  A study done by Katherine A Phillips in 2006 showed that there are equal amounts of men and women that have body dimorphic disorder (BDD) proving that gender does not effect how people see their bodies.

A problem that many teenagers have these days is how much influence they allow celebrities to have on their body confidence. Most teens seem to have a celebrity idol which may or may not influence the way they view their body.

These celebrity influences in some cases can have a very negative effect on the well being of an individual. Most teenagers are very active on social media, this allows them on a daily basis to view photos and videos of popular, attractive, healthy people. A study showed that women experience an average of 13 negative thoughts about their body each day, while 97% of women admit to having at least one "i hate my body" moment each day.

We interviewed Janice Hamilton, Vice principle of the sixth form and designated member of staff for the safe guarding of students about the way she feels education has an influence on teenagers body confidence today and how it may of effected her when she was of the same age.

Society is placing pressure on young people to conform to unrealistic expectations about body image; and we can see the results of this in the classroom. Many young people have such low self-esteem that they are not able to enjoy their time at school or reach their full academic potential.

We asked students how they feel body confidence affects popularity in education and on social terms within society today.

We interviewed Julie Maitland an Academic coach and student development coordinator at the sixth form about her feelings towards how body confidence effects students.

A lot of pressure is put on teenagers to look good by social media, social networking and even other teenagers. *insert facts and figures*

Sabina Vatter, a postgraduate student at Tallinn University in Estonia conducted research into the way partners feel about their body within relationships. She found that both women and men are more confident with their bodies when in a stable relationship.

After the break we will be interviewing a psychologist on how she feels body confidence effects people mentally and physically.

Brainstorm of Documentary Ideas - Maddie Collins

To decide on a topic for our documentary, we made a brainstorm of 10 initial ideas. We discussed what sort of things we would include in each documentary and from this we decided on 4 final ideas. We looked into each of the 4 topics more and thought about what sort of things we can include and what direction we would like each idea to go in. From this we decided on a final topic idea which we felt would be the most suitable and what we felt we could get the best footage for.

This is a brainstorm that we created of the top 10 ideas we had for the documentary. for each one we discussed the things we could include and what the target audience would be. Also we though about what vox pops and experts we could interview for it.

After thinking about this we came up with the main idea for our documentary which was body confidence. we felt that we could include a lot of things in this and had a lot to talk about as it was also a personal topic for us. We bought aspects of the other 10 ideas into the topic of body confidence and how it influences it. for example, celebrity inspirations, popularity, fashion, healthy living and social media.

Arranging Interviews - Maddie Collins

This is a Tyber message that I had sent to Janice Hamilton (Vice Principal) in order to arrange an expert interview for our blog. We arranged a time and place for us to interview her and I also sent her the questions we would be asking so that she knew what they were previous to the interview.

I also contacted Paul Ashdown (Principal) via Tyber to see if we could interview him for our documentary. He replied a week later to say that he would be happy to help but unfortunately this was when we had stopped filming for the documentary.

We overcome this obstacle by previously asking several teachers due to knowing that some wouldn't be able to participate. By doing this we managed to get 2 relevant teachers to give us their thoughts on body confidence for our documentary.

Storyboard {1st Draft} - Finnlea Murphy

Diary- Finnlea Murphy

23/09/14:

We started our blog about our documentary. At the moment we have just had lesson on the background research about documentary styles. This helps obviously gain knowledge and give inspiration for the documentary we would like to create.

25/09/14:

We discussed ideas for our documentary. We went from 10 to 4 to now finally having one. The twist on our idea is that we are not going to have a question that most other documentaries may have. We, simply will have a title, by doing this it will give us a wider variety of things we can discuss in our documentary. I feel confident about the idea as we are discussing body confidence and I think a lot of people have different opinions on body confidence.

26/09/14:

I decided to do some individual primary research linking our idea about body shapes and fashion together , I thought a simple observation exercise would not only give me knowledge on how fashion effects body types but also give us some research. This could also be a useful way to get ideas for questions as we can link it in with our vox pops.

02/10/14:

Today we went on a 'Location Recce' this basically means scouting for places that we could possibly film parts of our documentary. I feel this helped our group to understand and thoroughly think about where we can see our documentary being based and help us decided what we think would look professional and the most appealing. A main worry of mine is that we may use the lecture hall to interview vox pops. I think this may look slightly unnatural and as there are alot of bold colours in the room it may take the attention away from the person being interviewed.
I also created a pilot questionnaire to hand out to a few people in order to see if our questions are understood.

06/10/14:

I handed our questionnaire out to five people who attend college. I collected the data, analysed it and set it our in a pie cart form. Our three questions gave us answers but we could use more detail so now I know to improve and add a few open questions into our real questionnaire.

09/10/14:

Today we evaluted the information and research we had on our blog. Me and Maddie added alot more thorough information to our posts and also added what we thought we needed.

10/10/14:

I created the story board from what we discussed as a group. I tried to remember as much as possible but I feel it needs a lot more detail.

To improve this i will look in detail in which i think will create a professional documentary

Setting up the Tri-Pod - Maddie Collins

Before we have started to film our documentary, we decided to practice setting up the equipment correctly. We did this so that our footage was the best it could be and we practiced balancing the spirit level so the camera would be straight. Each of us set up the tri-pod, took a photo then put the tri-pod back down. This is useful as we all now have thorough knowledge on how to set it up and take it down correctly for when we film our documentary. By doing this we have each learnt different skills on how to set it up and take it down correctly which is beneficial to our filming for the documentary because we didn't spend ages trying to set it up.this would have given us a loss of actual filming time and getting footage.

Unclip the clips on the outside of the tripod.

Pull the tripod up whilst keeping your foot on the bottom part of the tripod to keep it steady.

Once the tripod is pulled up to your desired height, make sure all of the clips are secure.

Take off the base plate and screw it to the bottom of the camera that you are going to use.
Then slide the base plate back onto the tripod.

After you have done this, you need to make sure that the spirit level is correct so your camera is straight and you will get the best shot which is level.
Your tripod and camera are both then set up and ready to use!

To take the tripod down, you have to remove the camera off of the base plate and put it back onto the tripod.

Unclip the clips on the tripod, pull up the middle part of it and then slide the tripod back down to the shortest height it can be.

After you have done this, make sure the clips are secure.

Vox Pop Questions - Maddie Collins

These are the questions that we are going to ask our vox pops. We are asking these questions to gain more knowledge on what our target audience generally think about body confidence and how it affect different aspects of their lives. We are also finding out what influences their body confidence and what their idea of 'perfection' and 'beauty' is. We are going to include snippets of each answer in our documentary.

We feel that these questions are suitable for our target audience of 16-21 year olds. By asking these vox pop questions we are going to create meaning within our documentary. We are doing this by representing most teenagers as having a lack of body confidence and feel that this will show to the audience through the answers we will most likely get from these questions. By showing this to the audience it educates them further on the subject and makes them more aware of this regular thing that is happening at schools, colleges, and universities. These questions also touch on the subjects of bullying and the influence on body confidence through celebrities.

Pilot questionnaire result data- Finnlea Murphy

We decided to create a pilot questionnaire to see if people understood our idea of body confidence for a documentary. We also wanted to see if the documentary suited the target audience we were aiming for and if it was easy to express feelings towards the idea.

We asked five people ages 17-18 within The Sixth Form College Solihull three pilot questions to see what their answers were.

We did this task to ensure our ideas for the genre of our documentary made complete sense to the audience and was interesting and educational. I feel this helps us to choose what path we would like to go down with the types of questions we may ask our vox pops and experts.
